PLM Transformation
Background

Outdoor apparel company founded in 1973 in Ventura, California by Yvon Chouinard. Designs men's, women's, and kids' apparel and gear for surfing, climbing, mountain biking, and fly fishing. Certified B Corporation; recognized as one of the more sustainable brands in sports and outdoor clothing, with more than $145 million in grants and in-kind donations to date.

The inflection point

Modernizing a legacy FlexPLM foundation.

Patagonia’s PLM development software had reached the end of its supported life. The team set a goal to modernize the underlying processes to drive efficiency and workflow improvements.

The opportunity: upgrade the existing FlexPLM system, unlock additional PLM functionality, and optimize the business processes built on top of it.

Our approach

An 11-week discovery powered by the PLM Value Framework.

Patagonia engaged ArcherGrey for an 11-week discovery process built around our PLM Value Framework methodology. The team conducted over 50 hours of interviews with Patagonia’s business users and IT staff, ran in-depth process assessments, observed multiple current-state system demos, and reviewed FlexPLM functionality end-to-end.

What we owned:

  • 11-week discovery process with embedded business and IT interviews
  • Current-state process assessment and system demos
  • Functionality reviews against the FlexPLM K 12.0.2 target
  • PLM capability landscape and technical landscape analysis
  • Multi-year transformational roadmap and implementation plan

Business outcomes

A multi-year roadmap, grounded in 14 value opportunities.

The discovery surfaced clear opportunities for Patagonia to unlock value from a modernized FlexPLM environment. The team defined a recommended path forward and gave the business actionable detail on what to fix and what to gain.

What we delivered:

  • Identified 14 value opportunities across the PLM landscape
  • Surfaced that 25% of Patagonia’s customizations could be removed, with more than 80% of those traced to complex JSP overrides
  • Mapped pain points across connectivity, data accuracy, accessibility, reporting, and vendor collaboration
  • Recommendation to upgrade to FlexPLM K 12.0.2 with revised business processes
  • Multi-year roadmap of transformational phases the business could execute against

Patagonia closed the discovery with a clear plan, a defined target system, and a roadmap their teams could execute against.
